Saturday, June 30 (3–6 p.m.): Record-Keeping Principles and Best Practices

This workshop will introduce farmers to record keeping tools and principles for their businesses. The presenter will be Maile Woodhall, an agricultural outreach specialist with The Kohala Center, who works with food producers in applying for USDA organic and food safety certification, USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) funding, crop insurance, and more.

The workshop will provide an overview of seed (bean)-to-sale tracking, how to develop Standard Operating Procedures, and record keeping systems. Mrs. Woodhall will share practical tips and key steps in organizing and maintaining your record keeping system for growing or expanding your farm.

Tuesday, July 17 (3–6 p.m.): Business Capitalization and Funding Sources

This workshop will introduce farmers and food producers to loan and grant opportunities for their businesses and share best practices for preparing successful applications. The presenter will be Megan Blazak, agricultural business development specialist with The Kohala Center, who helps small businesses prepare applications to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and other public and private funders.

The workshop will orient participants to the U.S. Farm Bill, and provide an overview of grant and financial incentive programs offered by USDA. Ms. Blazak will share practical tips and key steps for preparing successful applications for competitive programs.

The workshop will also address business capitalization and sources of loan funding, including alternative loan programs suitable for disadvantaged and beginning farmers and ranchers. Participants will learn the basics of creditworthiness, elements of a loan package, and what to expect when working with a lender.
